Gaming: Civilization V Installation Problems

Just got Civilization V for Christmas thanks to my family.
Found out that Civilization V was being a pain right out of the box.
Like most games to install on a computer, one needs to put in a DVD or CD-ROM in to the PC optical drive and let windows auto run. Then follow the on screen instructions to install the game. However, was it like this when I installed Civilization V? No, not really... First thing it did was check my Steam client, and ask for my CD Key for activation, and for some reason Steam thought I purchased the game online and thus started to download the entire game off the web.
Here I have a physical copy of Civilization V on DVD-ROM, and it wanted to install the game by downloading it entirely off the internet!

It took me a little bit, but I managed to get steam to install Civilization V off the DVD-ROM, which it should have in the 1st place, and after it did that. Steam would then check the version and download the patch.

Also, there where other people who are having the same trouble as I did.

The point about buying a physical copy of a game is to have it on hand as a legal backup. I thought it was totally dumb that it would force me to download the entire game off the internet...
